MINI MAKEOVER: ESSENTIAL EYELINER
I learned how to draw the line at nothing less than perfect.
I’ve been wearing winged liner since high school. One of the few, powerful gems of being a teenager is you can pull off crazy looks and still be the most attractive person in the room. I never felt the pressure to be a perfectionist about my eyeliner application, because in my mind, the messier, the more attitude (and therefore, the better). As a professional, I realize it’s not so cute to look like you spent all night at a show, especially when your life is more corporate meetings than nightclubs. I headed to my local Sephora, where beauty expert Noam finally taught me how to clean up my act, one cotton bud at a time. KELLEY HOFFMAN
STEP ONE: PREP
Noam began the Mini Makeover by patting Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm along my browbones and under my eyes to help with hydration, smoothing my skin’s texture and the longevity of the look.
STEP TWO: SHAPE
Next, she filled in my sparse brows with Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo in Taupe with SEPHORA COLLECTION Pro Brow Brush #20. She explained how it was important to make sure your brows don’t disappear when wearing a bold liner look.
STEP THREE: DEFINE
After, she primed my eye with Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube in Eden, a matte shade. She tapped MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Shadow in M810 Flesh-Colored Pink on center of the lids and browbones, to help create an arched look. She suggested matte shades because she thought shimmer would be too much for day, and to help the liner stand out. Next, she gently lifted my lids and wiggled a NARS Eye Liner Pencil in Black Moon between lashes to deepen lash lines. To make sure you don’t poke your eye, she said to sharpen the pencil, then dull it down a little by warming it up on your clean inner wrist.
STEP FOUR: LINE
Noam dipped a SEPHORA COLLECTION Pro Angled Liner Brush #22 evenly into Laura Mercier Crème Eye Liner in Noir, swearing by this long-wearing waterproof formula (“I go swimming in it,” she said). Next, she sketched on the winged liner through the outer corners, connecting the tails to the center of the lash lines, forming a long triangle. She filled in the shape for a flicked look, then went over her marked line and followed through toward the center, which offered a flirtier effect than going all the way into the inner corners of my eyes. She filled in the gaps in short strokes, lifting up the lid for a tight delivery. For a crisp look, she cleaned the lines with a cotton bud, then used SEPHORA COLLECTION Pro Flat Concealer #76 brush with Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Waterproof Concealer in Fair-Light to perfect the edges.
STEP FIVE: REFINE
For the final touch, she curled my lashes and ended with two coats of Urban Decay Perversion Mascara. When I looked in the mirror, I couldn’t believe how beautiful the liner looked. I’ll definitely be hitting up more Mini Makeovers at Sephora, stat.
